Happy Easter to everybody out there. Did you know?
Each Easter season, Americans buy more than 700 million Marshmallow Peeps, shaped like chicks, as well as Marshmallow Bunnies and Marshmallow Eggs, making them the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy.
This is an interesting fact but..... What does it have to do with Jesus rising from the dead and ascending into heaven? Usually I don't say much, but I really do think that holidays have gone out of control! Easter is a Christian Holiday. If you are going to celebrate the occasion at least celebrate it for Jesus. If you want to have another holiday on a different day, with bunnies and eggs and lots of candy, do it. Just on another day. I think it is sad that we have commercialized holidays that have a deeper meaning. I am not against fun and having easter egg hunts, but don't let it taint the real meaning of it all. I know in American we are so "PC" (Politcally Correct), that we are afraid to make anybody feel left out or offended. But, eighty-three percent of Americans identify themselves as Christians. So do we really have to hide our beliefs to make 17% of people not offended. This country was founded on Christian principles and we live in a democratic nation. Where guess what..... Majority rules. So please can Christians have a day to celebrate our Lord in Savior without candy, cards and make believe characters?
Before you start killing bunnies, you may be interested in some of the Easter Bunny's origins. Here's a couple excerpts from Wikipedia:
ReplyDelete"Greeks to this day typically dye their Easter eggs red, the color of blood, in recognition of the renewal of life in springtime (and, later, the blood of the sacrificed Christ)".
"German Protestants wanted to retain the Catholic custom of eating colored eggs for Easter, but did not want to introduce their children to the Catholic rite of fasting. Eggs were forbidden to Catholics during the fast of Lent, which was the reason for the abundance of eggs at Easter time".
The Bunny isn't the first to be commercialized. Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods were just athletes until they became mega-brands. Who knows, before long it will be the Easter Tiger!
Thanks for the input....
ReplyDeleteI still don't see where candy and bunnies come into the picture? Also, is Wikipedia comparing Jesus to bunnies or Jesus to Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Because I think Jesus could take Jordan in a game of one on one. :)
Actually, I was comparing the Easter Bunny to Jordan and Woods. The whole commercialization thing.
ReplyDeleteBunnies to Jocks.
