Cold weather season is here and that means one thing to me, it's nosebleed season. Why is that the case? Well, for me it's two reasons. First, it's the same reason for anyone who lives in a dry climate during the winter. It's the dry air. Dry air causes nosebleeds because it dries out the delicate, moist lining of the nasal passages, making the tiny blood vessels close to the surface more fragile and prone to cracking and bleeding. This is especially true in cold, dry weather, but also occurs indoors from heating or air conditioning systems that reduce humidity.
Then for me I take a daily medicine. Back in 2018 I had 6 strokes when I was 38 years old. Yes, I almost died and it was a scary time in my life. But, I got thru it, and now I have to take a daily medicine the rest of my life that makes nosebleeds more common. Especially in the dry air of the Winter.
So what can we do to help stop the nosebleeds this time of year? The first thing I absolutely think everyone should have is a humidifier for your house. Newer homes nowadays have them built into the heating system, but if you have an older house like me, you need to buy a standalone humidifier. Now, in my case I have 4 of them in my house. One in the living room, then 3 in the bedrooms. Then I have one in my office at work. And yes, buy distilled water to put in them! I know it's more expensive, but you don't want that white dust all over your house from using typical faucet water. Unless, you like to clean all the time. Then go for it!
The second suggestion I have is drinking plenty of water. You should drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Yes, you should be doing this not matter the season, but especially during the winter. Keeping your body hydrated helps keep the bloody noses away!
Then my last suggestion is using a saline nasal spray. You can buy any brand at your local store. Apply a few squirts of saline spray into each nostril several times a day.
There you go. Do those 3 things and hopefully you have a good Winter of no or very few nosebleeds. Because we don't really want to see a scene like in the movie Psycho with blood on the bottom of the shower! Good luck!
